The book opens with a short introduction to Indian music, in particular classical Hindustani music, followed by a chapter on the role of statistics in computational musicology. The authors then show how to analyze musical structure using Rubato, the music software package for statistical analysis. As David Reck has pointed out, Hindustani classical music is well-suited to Western adaptation, in that the forms and materials of the music are to a certain extent syncretic. Hindustani musical performances are traditionally composed of three parts: a slow, meditative alap, a medium-tempo, rhythmic jor, and a climactic, speedy and intricate.   Mukesh Garg’s “Sahitya aur Sangeet” is a veritable treasure trove that covers the evolution of Hindustani music and tells us about the way music has shaped up the country’s cultural life.
